Can snakes hear? Why do a cat's eyes glow in the dark? The cat's eyes are adapted for seeing in the dark. During the day, the pupils contract, but at night they open wide letting in every bit of light possible. The back of the eyes is coated with polished silvery pigments called Eumelanin and Phaeomelanin, which reflects every bit of light that falls on the eye. That is why cat's eyes glow in the dark.
