Exam Stress Busters

Exam stress can be reduced if right stress management techniques are followed. Read on and find causes of exam stress and tips for parents to reduce stress in children.

Exams and stress can be seldom alienated from each other; they go hand in hand. But there are some simple plans that can help tackle exam related stress. Given below are the causes of stress in children and few stress buster tips:

Factor that Lead to Stress in Child

Negative thoughts can bog down your child and results in exam stress. Distraction can come in every form and way. They need to be avoided at all costs. They disturb, shift the focus and keep on growing in the minds, thereby destroying the entire mental ability. The thoughts are strayed from the studies and lead to physical disorders like sleeplessness, indigestion, headache, excessive sweating, abdominal issues along with mental problems like irritability and insomnia. It is always the lack of self confidence that gets manifested in stress related problems.

Teach Your Child to Keep Cool

This is an effective way to counter exam stress. It is true that performance is important but make sure that you do not make a great deal out of it. That is, if your child had secured a good grade in monthly tests or pre-tests, then it is important for you to make sure that he is not over-confident about it.

Similarly, if he did not get fair marks, then you as a parent have to make sure that he does not lose heart but encourage him to do well. The real ability of the student does not get reflected through the examination marks. Remember that exams are a means to test what is learnt in the classes and how well the child is able to reproduce them in his term papers. Taking it easy without making a deal of it will surely reduce the stress.

Fix a Schedule for Your Child

It is very important to value discipline in order to attain something. Good performance in exams calls for serious and dedicated adherence to routines. Help your child to maintain a schedule and also make sure that he follows it. Devise a strategy or plan such that each and every subject receives equal attention. None of the subjects should be overlooked or kept in a backburner for reason such as your child is good at it or any other reason. Weaker subjects require more practice and the redoing the exercises will hone up the skills.

Once the concepts are clear, it is easier to understand the chapter and solve the exercises. Once this is done, it resolves the difficulty in remembering the chapter.

Help Your Child to Build Self Belief -

First the self-belief needs to be built in your child that he can learn well and remember. Advise him on ways to select certain keywords that will help him to remember the chapters easily. Teachers help can also be taken.

Read Aloud to Your Child -

The age-old tactic of reading loudly does help in remembering the chapters. Similarly, multi tasking during exams are not advisable. Do not let your child’s focus sway. Watching television, listening to music, radio or solving puzzles or chatting and texting on the phone should be avoided during study hours. The study place should be conducive to learning.

Taking adequate rest and maintaining a healthy diet will help to retain calm and exam stress will be effectively controlled.

Usually I schedule a time table one week prior to my child's exams and follow it regularly which helps him complete his entire syllabus and revise the chapters on the day before exam.
